The Australian Timber Industry Association (ATIA) says the federal government's decision to impose a moratorium on logging on public land will have no impact on the industry. The moratorium is expected to apply from this month. The Association says the industry has been hit hard by the loss of $1.5 billion in federal funding since the Turnbull Government took office, while the Government has committ...
article By the end of the century, the forest cover of the world will be less than half what it is today, according to a new report by the US Forest Service.
According to the report, we can expect to save up to 7 million hectares of forest per year, while the timber industry can expect a $3.6 trillion economic impact, or roughly 7% of the US GDP, by 2035.
“The forest is in danger,” said Laura O’Donnell, the lead author of the report and the former US Forest Management Agency (USFMA) assistant secretary for the forests and grasslands.
But in order to do something about it, she said, we need to be a bit more optimistic.
The report highlights some promising steps that we can take.
For example, it’s a bit premature to think that we will see a forest loss rate of less than 10% per year.
That’s the rate that was projected in 2005 by the Woods Hole Research Center.
However, it turns out that the forest loss rates have been increasing in recent decades, and the rate of increase is accelerating.
If you look at the USFMA’s data, the annual forest loss has increased by nearly 2.5% per decade.
O’Donnell said this was the first time that we’ve seen a 10% forest loss in the past 25 years.
So, while forest loss could decrease, it would likely still be more than twice the annual rate of forest growth that it has been in recent years.
Another promising sign that we could be seeing a significant forest loss is the increase in the number of acres of timber that are being cut down.
In 2010, the US Forestry Service said that there were over 7 billion hectares of timber in the US.
Since then, however, the amount of timber being cut has fallen to around 4.7 billion hectares, according the report.
This trend is likely to continue, O’Connell said.
It’s important to remember that the US government’s forest management plans are based on an outdated understanding of what forests look like.
We need to make sure that we are really looking at what forests are like today, rather than just looking at the past.
To do that, the report recommends that forest management agencies work with local communities to identify what kind of forest looks like today and to use data from existing studies to help develop forest management programs.
Another step the report recommended was to reevaluate the roles of farmers and ranchers, and to work with these communities to provide them with tools and support to help them manage their land.
Of course, not everyone is interested in helping to reduce forest loss, and there are also a lot of ways in which people can make a difference.
One of the things that the report did suggest is to focus on people who have a vested interest in the forest.
Some people are just more interested in cutting down the trees and taking the wood for themselves, or taking it out of the environment, said O’Brien.
And those people could do a lot more to help reduce the impacts of deforestation.
