article By the end of 2020, the federal government expects to have a total of about 3.5 million acres of wood-based biofuels, according to the Bureau of Land Management.
Those biofuers are harvested in areas like the southern and western plains of Texas, where the US population is growing, and the southern plains of Alabama.
“It’s a very large amount of wood,” says Brian Kocher, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Forest Science.
Kochel says that biofuel production will likely be the main driver of global wood demand by the middle of the century, but that there are other fuels that will become more important over time, like biofuiles for electric vehicles, and biofuils for wood-burning power plants.
“Wood is the ultimate fuel for electric cars and wood for fuel cells, so we’re going to have more wood burning than fossil fuels for a long time to come,” Koche says.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that biomass, the primary fuel of power plants, will become the largest fuel source by 2035.
“We’ve got a tremendous amount of biomass and we’re just not using it for electricity,” Kontcher says.
A lot of people are trying to make a big deal about biomass, he adds, but they’re ignoring a lot of other things like carbon sequestration, carbon sequestered waste, and biomass that’s in other forms.
“That’s a major problem in the future because it’s going to be used for a lot more than just fossil fuels.”
Biofuels for power plants are the next big problem for biofuilers, and there are more to come.
“There are more than 1,200 biomass-related projects under way in the United States and Canada that are all going to increase in number,” KOCHE says.
Biofuiles are expected to grow in popularity with consumers, but in addition to the potential to cut down on the carbon footprint of fossil fuels, biomass-based fuels have some other potential benefits, like using less fuel and helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“When it comes to biofuile generation, I think we’re really just looking at the beginning,” Kucher says.
“But we’re in a place where biomass- and biofuel-based vehicles are coming into use and there’s going be a lot going on.
And it’s not just about using biomass as a fuel.
We’re also going to need biomass to power electric vehicles.”
